Reading
It is really important for your child to practise reading as much as possible in order to consolidate their learning in school and to help them to broaden their vocabulary skills, general knowledge and imagination. While we practise reading in school as much as possible, each child is expected to read to an adult/older sibling at home at least 3 times per week. This needs to be dated and signed by the adult/older sibling who hears them to read in their reading record book.
Children who meet this requirement receive rewards and prizes for themselves and the class.
Homework
Homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be back into school by the following Wednesday in order for it to be marked.
Spellings homework will be sent home each Friday by your child's 'Read, Write, Inc' teacher, and will be checked the following Friday.
Medical conditions
Please inform your child’s teacher & school office immediately if they have any medical conditions/requirements.
Please speak to the office if medication is required within the school day. If your child only requires medication to be taken between 1-3 times per day then they do not need to take it while at school.
- All children with asthma should have a spare inhaler at school available to them at all times, which must be labelled with their name.
- If your child has any dietary requirements please let the main office know as soon as possible.
Absences
- If your child is unable to come to school for any reason, please call the school (01502) 565757 to let us know as soon as possible (before 9:00am) so that we can mark their absence correctly in the register. We have an absence line that can be called anytime day or night and a message can be left.
- If your child is absent for a longer period of time, your teacher will be happy to provide some work for them to do at home if you wish. Please contact your teacher if this is required.
Contact
- You can contact the teacher by writing in their reading record book, which is checked daily. Alternatively if you wish to have a meeting with your teacher, please make an appointment with them either through the school office or liaising with the teacher directly.
- Please let your class teacher know if your child is being picked up by an additional adult other than yourself. We will not allow a child to go home with an unfamiliar adult that has not been designated.
- Please inform the main school office if you have a change of address, contact number or email.
We're looking forward to a great year!
The Key Stage 1 Team
Outdoor classroom
We have been working hard to create and expand our outdoor classroom for key stage 1.
Here are some photos of the progress so far.
Writing area
Within our writing area we have included everything the children will need to write their own ideas, stories, letters or non-fiction writing. Having it next to the role play area means they can flow freely with their ideas taking inspiration from their play and apply it to their writing. As we progress through each topic of work additional resources will be made available to the children to use to enhance their writing. We are now adopting the Jane Considine approach to writing within each class which will be reflected in the outdoor learning space from what we implement in the classroom. Jane Considine promotes experience lessons to broaden children's imagination and horizons and then apply that rich knowledge to their writing.
Maths area
In school we follow the white rose approach to learning math, by using maths mastery to deepen children's knowledge of each unit of learning from numbers to 100 through to height weight and measure. At the heart of this way of learning is the use of concreate resources that children can use to aid them in their process and thinking. In the maths area children will be able to experience hands on learning of a topic within maths to gain real life examples of how we apply maths every day in the world around us.
Roleplay are and small world
Roleplay and small world areas are essential to making links between a child's thoughts on a topic and the application of new experiences learnt. It's in these areas children talk between themselves creating their own narrative enhancing their speech and language skills. Children will be able to move freely between the areas applying what they have learnt. This half term the roleplay area will be set up as a bakery to link to our topic of the great fire of London, where the fire started, with the addition of weighing scales to link to our maths topic of weight and capacity. The small world area will have figures or Artifacts for the children to explore about London.
Natural area.
We have began work on our natural area. The first phase has been to plant tree saplings in our tree nursery. We were very lucky to be chosen by the Earth restoration service who donated the trees.
The Earth Restoration Service was established in 2001, by Peter Phelps, he was inspired by the work of Alan Watson Featherstone, who had success bringing back life to the Caledonian Forests of Scotland. Peter's mission is to encourage positive ecological action at a local level whilst inspiring the world’s citizens to play their part in rehabilitating the natural health of their environments.
The Earth Restoration Service has a proactive collaboration with schools, community groups, other charities, businesses, landowners and government agencies to create an alliance addressing the challenges of regenerating the Earth.
Since the beginning, the ERS has served over 750 schools across the UK and some further afield, planting over 60,000 new trees, and engaging 50,000 children and their local communities. You can find more info about this and our environmental restoration work and programmes on their website
https://www.earthrestorationservice.org/
Once we have looked after the trees in our tree nursery for two years they will be planted out in the local community. We planted, Oak, Hazel, Dog wood, Crab apple and Hawthorn trees and look forward to watching them grow.
