Our Maths Vision

At Poplars Community Primary School, we aim for all children to be able to think mathematically, enabling them to reason and solve new and unfamiliar problems with confidence and resilience. We aspire to make mathematics meaningful and purposeful by encouraging children to apply their knowledge to other areas of the curriculum wherever possible. We support children in developing technical and accurate vocabulary they can use in lessons and support them in identifying links to the real world.

We believe pupils learn best through experience and therefore encourage pupils to deepen their understanding of mathematics through a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach (CPA). This approach supports children to develop their conceptual understanding of the underlying principles of mathematical problems before using mental calculations and formal methods.

We aim for all children to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

We had the fantastc opportunity to take a group of Year 3 and 4 children on a special Maths Day where we got to investigate patterns. We're going to use this in the classroom to help us learn!
