Maths

  • As well as our ongoing number fluency work (practising number bonds to 10, practising counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s, finding one more and one less) we will be learning about Money. We will pretend to buy fruit from a market and give the correct change. We will complete word problems around buying African food.

Art and DT

  • We will be creating bowls out of salt dough, baking them and then when they are dry, painting them in an African-inspired pattern.
  • Observational drawings and sketchings of fruit.

Science

  • Fruit discussion (the seven fruits in Handa’s surprise, if we can) and exploring the five senses when discussing the fruits. Encourage your child to talk about how it smells, what it looks like before it is cut as well as after, how it tastes, how it feels and whether they like it or not and why.

Geography

  • Where in the world do different fruits come from? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu6Y-gTZtzc Children will have a map and different fruits, they will cut out the fruit and stick it on the map to show which country it is grown in.
  • What is life like in urban Kenya? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zmqtfg8 Children will discuss similarities and differences to their own daily routine.
  • Exploring famous landmarks/features of Africa, e.g pyramids in Egypt, table mountain in South Africa, River Nile in Egypt, Victoria Falls in Zambia, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the Serengeti National Park.

Here are some amazing descriptive paragraphs written by the Year 6s during home learning!

Professor Beard was making a really tricky potion. As he made the potion, the vessel started shimmering with the bright, glistening potion inside. The smell was as sweet as a strawberry with a hint of bitterness- like a cherry. With the sun shining through the big window, the fragrant smell of the potion lingered in the air. The sound the potion was giving out reminded him of pitter patter raindrops hitting the surface of a lake. When Professor Beard  added another component to the concoction, the colour changed, becoming more vibrant. The taste of the potion tickled his taste buds, fizzing and popping as he swallowed it. As Professor Beard drank his potion droplets landed on his skin, which felt smooth and velvety to touch. Luke 6AM

In a colossal house, in the middle of a woods, lived a very intelligent scientist, who made colourful potions that sparkled black and blue like the northern lights. His potions harnessed extraordinary powers like invisibility or swiftness, however every single one of the powers smelt as tasty as a sweet strawberry. The scientist was a tall, smart man, his beard like a bush, his nose pointed like a bullet, his eyebrows as straight as pencils. The hardworking potion maker also studied a lot of books to become smarter.Every now and then the potions would make a mysterious gargle sound. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door but no one ever came to his house as it was in the middle of a gargantuan forest. Another thing, no one knew he lived there. All of a sudden, there was a huge bang... Lewis 6OG

Mr Norris was trying to make an exciting new potion in his triangular, smelly garden shed. The potion was in his shiny squared flask. It was shimmering like a thousand sapphires and fairy sparkles . However, it smelled like mouldy, putrid old socks. The potion hummed like a fairy singing a calm lullaby . You could hear the little voices singing as if the fairies were sitting on his tired shoulders.

The potion was glowing like beating fairy wings as it was changing colour. It was a bright white, but was now changing to glamorous dark pink. The dark pink potion stopped glowing and turned into a jelly that smelled like fresh picked raspberries. Mr Norris was so shocked as he stared  into his shiny squared flask. The potion had worked and now he could make people happy. Erin 6AM

Wow - what fantastic description Erin, with some excellent similes! Although, I fear, it might have ACTUALLY been my socks that were smelly...... CN

The professor's fingers became dry and weak as he skipped through books in an important hurry.  He had to distinguish the potion and finish it in the minimum of 2 hours! Sweat trickled down his head while nerves trickled up his arms and legs. he started to give up hope, until  he discovered something which may even help  more than getting an A in his exam. He followed the given instructions with almost a smile on his face. He was amazed of the beauty of this unknown potion. The colours mixed perfectly, sparkling as the sun shon through the window. It smelt like freshley picked flowers but then had a strong cinnamon oder lurking behind. Bubbles popped making a small peaceful noise like listening into a sea shell. The professor had never seen anything like it, it made swishing noises to ( not as peaceful, but fascinating!) like a tap running and landing in the bath slowly. He knew he’d do great with this potion! Ella 6AM
